3. HOW IT RELATES TO THE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN
The School Improvement Plan indicated that Art and Design was one of the priority curriculum areas during the academic year 2000-2001 and that it will be again during 2003 - 2004.
This review will involve:
- An audit of teacher knowledge and expertise
- An audit of resources
- An examination of current practice
- An audit of all paperwork associated with Art and Design.
4. INTENTIONS
Windmill School aims to promote Art and Design as a well respected and enjoyable aspect of the curriculum. Art and Design is also seen as a means to enhance the overall school environment (see also Display and Environment guidelines not included here).
Windmill School recognises the legal requirement for Art and Design as laid down in the National Curriculum 2000 orders. These include:
- investigating and making
- knowledge and understanding
- investigating and review.
Windmill School also understands that art and design for pupils is more than a matter of painting a picture or making artifacts. It is a means through which pupils express their individuality and communicate ideas about themselves and their world.
Windmill School intends to:
- equip its teachers with up-to-date knowledge, skills and understanding of the Art and Design programmes of study
- help the staff provide all pupils with learning links with other subject areas e.g. R.E., Geography and History (cultures, localities and times past), Design Technology etc.
- provide adequate resources.
- Pupil entitlement
Pupils will be taught Art and Design for 36 hours per year at Key Stage 1 and 45 hours at Key Stage 2.
We shall also do our best to enrich our pupils experience by offering opportunities to visit galleries and to involve Artists working in our school.
5. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
Windmill School aims to allow children to express their creativity with confidence and to enjoy communicating their ideas visually.
Windmill school aims to:
- stimulate children’s imagination and encourage them to develop original ideas in 2D and 3D forms
- develop the children’s necessary technical skills in order to allow them to realize their ideas
- promote visual literacy (including relevant vocabulary) and encourage children’s understanding of art as a form of communication
- encourage children to make informed judgements about art, including their own work and that of recognized artists
- develop children’s observational skills
- provide an environment that enriches and promotes art and the children’s achievements.
6. PRINCIPLES OF TEACHING AND LEARNING
Art and Design will be promoted as a subject in its own right but it will also be used to enhance other areas of the curriculum.
Teachers will plan a range of structured activities that clearly builds on previous work and take into account previous achievement. The activities will give opportunities for pupils to engage in the appropriate range of techniques and materials pertinent to their Key Stage.
Teachers will ensure that a variety of teaching methods are used to develop pupils independence when working independently, in groups and as a whole class. Teachers will include direct teaching of techniques and processes as well as the nature and history of art.
We aim to set the highest standards for all pupils and to provide activities that stretch the most able whilst supporting and encouraging those that lack confidence.
At Windmill School, art and design will be taught in a context that has spiritual, moral, social and cultural relevance to the pupils lives.
Pupils will be provided with a learning environment that stimulates and supports visual investigation and provides for the safe development of practical skills. Pupils will be encouraged to learn through practical activities, including investigations that are open-ended in nature.
7. EQUAL ACCESS AND OUTCOME
All pupils, regardless of culture, gender, physical disability and social circumstances will have equal access to all aspects of the Art and Design curriculum.
The art syllabus in Windmill School will cater for all age ranges and all abilities; it is recognised that the pupils will progress at their own rates.
Special considerations will be made for pupils with physical and sensory handicap i.e. cerebral palsy (spatial difficulties) and visual impairment including colour blindness. Where appropriate, support staff will be involved and extra resources will be provided e.g. dual handed scissors, non slip rulers.
Gifted pupils will be encouraged to progress and reach their full potential, whilst still maintaining a breadth of experiences.
All pupils will have their achievements recognised.
8. HEALTH AND SAFETY
All staff at Windmill School will ensure that all pupils are taught the correct way to handle all equipment and materials used in art and design activities, with an emphasis on personal safety and the safety of others (see Appendix 1).
