At Windmill we firmly believe that learning and good behaviour go hand in hand. We therefore work very hard to ensure an orderly and well behaved atmosphere permeates everything we do.
The Windmill School Charter Rap
At Windmill School we do our best
We try to look after all the rest.
To everyone we are polite
So we don’t ever get into fights.
We keep going when things are hard
And we won’t get a red or yellow card.
We behave very well
So people just won’t have to tell.
Nicely is the way we play
So we have fun at the end of the day.
We always walk around our school
And we all think Windmill is really COOL!
In addition to the Charter, each class also has a set of Golden Rules. These rules are negotiated at the beginning of every year and are designed by the children and their teachers.
Our Golden Rules
Always put things away properly and tidily.
Always listen when someone is speaking.
Always work carefully and sensibly.
Always be kind to everyone.
Always try our best.
Enjoy yourself and smile!
Year 3.
Any form of bullying in our school is completely against our values and ethos. We therefore do our utmost to make sure that it does not occur. However, it does rear its ugly head occasionally ( and we regard verbal abuse just as much a form of bullying as physical abuse).
When this happens we in school are sometimes the last to know. The child who is subject to the bullying often blames itself and therefore does not tell anyone. Should
you notice any change in your child’s behaviour, please treat the situation with great sympathy. If it turns out that your child is being bullied, let us know in school right away. We shall then adopt an equally sympathetic viewpoint, but do our very best to get to the bottom of what is going on and thus eradicate it.
At Windmill we firmly believe that positive reinforcement is far better than negative response. Our Behaviour Policy therefore revolves around:
the school has adopted a house system. Each child is allotted to a house and their individual merit points go to house totals which are announced weekly. Children will be involved in a variety of inter house activities.
our Achievement Assemblies when children who have achieved something of note during the previous week are asked to share whatever it is with the rest of their Key Stage and parents (who are always warmly invited to attend): the children receive a sticker in recognition
children sharing any outstanding work with the Headteacher; their names are entered into our “Achievement Folder”; any child who shares their work in this way on five separate occasions throughout the year is rewarded with a formal letter written by the Headteacher to their parents; this letter gives exact details of the child’s achievement and enables the parents to share in their child’s success; the letter also invites the parents to attend the next appropriate Achievement Assembly so that they may witness their child receiving a Certificate of Merit for their achievement
Good Behaviour Certificates. These are awarded at the end of each term starting with the Bronze Certificate and culminating, at the end of the year, with the Gold Certificate. The Certificates are awarded to every child who has behaved well and not received any Yellow or Red Cards (see below).
Coleman Cup Awards. These are awarded to individual children on a half termly basis. Children are nominated for these small trophies for outstanding performance either academically or socially.
Sadly, sometimes things do not always work out as we and everyone else would like. We negotiate with our oldest children what our rules are. Should anyone then break these rules, they are issued with a Yellow Card for minor offences and a Red Card for more serious ones. Any child receiving a Yellow or Red Card will be subject to one or more of the following sanctions. They may be:
sent to work with the Headteacher
deprived of one or more playtimes or lunchtimes
barred from participating in a certain activity
asked to write a report of the incident in which they have been involved
asked to write a letter of apology.
Our children’s behaviour is monitored very carefully and careful records kept of all cards issued. Two Yellow Cards issued in one half term period instantly means a Red Card being given. The Headteacher is informed right away of any Red Cards being issued. A Red Card will inevitably lead to stronger punishment. Two Red Cards issued in any half term period will mean that the Headteacher will contact the parents concerned and ask them to visit the school in order to jointly plan the appropriate action and the steps to be taken. This will sometimes include keeping a Good Behaviour Diary where the child is effectively “on report” or asking for the child to be removed from school during the lunch hour.
In very exceptional circumstances, pupils will be dealt with by
Detentions occur either during the lunch hour or immediately after school and last for 20 minutes. Parents of any child being kept behind school for a detention are always given 24 hour’s written notice.
Any child who receives either a Yellow or a Red Card instantly disqualifies themselves from receiving a Good Behaviour Certificate for that term. Should their behaviour improve the following term, they may then receive a Certificate.
