On Tuesday 26th February, we at Windmill Primary school had the grand opening of our brand new sensory room. Installed on the site of the old swimming pool changing rooms, the sensory room includes a large bubble tube on a padded podium, a tactile wall, a ‘milky way’ light-changing mat, a large comfortable flexicushion and projector & music system, among other items. We are proud to be an inclusive school, and strive to meet our pupils’ varying and wide range of needs.
The sensory room is designed as a peaceful and therapeutic environment, where our pupils can go to find calm and engage their senses. The project of changing the area from an old swimming pool changing room (used as storage) to a beautifully renovated and usable sensory room has been a massive community effort; Our PTA group, the RWSA, secured funds from Tesco and the family of some former pupils kindly made a generous contribution. We also had parents & staff moving things, donating carpet and giving up their time to make this happen. A local air conditioning and heating company, Elite Cooling systems, also generously donated and installed a whole heating and cooling system for us! In all, it has taken a year from the idea concept to installation and we were very proud to have Mayor Lovell cut the ribbon on Tuesday!
